Ink Behind Bars

Prisoner feedback

Elever Training Institute works across prisons nationwide, delivering practical skills courses designed to equip prisoners with genuine vocational abilities they can use immediately upon release, making the transition back to society smoother and more sustainable. We believe in the power of education to create real change. By offering hands-on training in high-demand skills, we help participants build confidence, employability, and purpose while still inside. Our courses are proven to work — participants who complete our programmes consistently report significant improvements in their prospects and outlook.

Ink Behind Bars represents a transformative approach to rehabilitation within UK prisons. Founded by experienced tattoo artist and educator Alan Lofts, Elever Institute became the first organisation commissioned by the Ministry of Justice to deliver structured tattoo training across HM Prisons.

The programme goes far beyond teaching technical skills. Participants develop expertise in health and safety, design principles, equipment handling, and professional client care—all underpinned by a curriculum that emphasises personal development, self-esteem, and artistic expression. Learners practise on synthetic skin in a safe environment before progressing to professional-standard work, ensuring graduates are genuinely job-ready.

The impact speaks for itself. Creative vocational training of this kind has been shown to reduce recidivism rates by up to 30%, with participants reporting renewed purpose and therapeutic healing. Many graduates go on to secure employment as tattoo artists, breaking the cycle of reoffending and building meaningful careers.

Since its inception, Ink Behind Bars has expanded across multiple correctional facilities and now works specifically with female ex-offenders, recognising the additional barriers women face to reintegration. Success stories include former prisoners who have become working tattoo artists and now advocate for the programme within their communities.

Looking forward, Elever aims to expand the initiative across additional UK prisons and into Europe, with mentorship opportunities potentially leading to job placements for up to 40% of graduates. This is rehabilitation that empowers.

One of Our Success Stories

Dan discovered Ink Behind Bars while incarcerated and completed our comprehensive training course with dedication and determination. Upon release, he began working alongside us.

Today, Dan travels across the country delivering talks in prisons, sharing his story and showing inmates that change is possible. His work has inspired hundreds to engage with our programmes. He now mentors new trainees and contributes to curriculum development, embodying our mission that education and belief in human potential create lasting transformation.
